FAQ
EMG is really two examinations
The nerve conduction study uses surface electrodes to measure how fast a nerve conducts. In needle EMG, a very fine needle electrode is placed into the muscle to record its electrical activity. Together they distinguish whether the problem lies at the nerve root, at a point where the nerve is compressed, in a diffuse nerve disorder, or in the muscle itself.
Needle EMG is uncomfortable and can be painful, but it is brief and requires no anaesthesia. You return to normal activity afterwards. The result is not a diagnosis on its own; it is interpreted together with the examination and imaging.
What you are asked to prepare
- On the day of the test, do not apply cream, lotion or oil to your arms and legs; it interferes with electrode contact
- Tell the team if you take blood thinners; this matters for needle EMG
- Make and model details if you have a pacemaker or implanted device
- Which finger or muscle the numbness or weakness started in, and how quickly it spread
- Any earlier EMG report and neck or lumbar MRI images
- Comfortable, short-sleeved clothing
Process and timing
The test is usually completed in a single session lasting 30 to 60 minutes. With the neurologist review, 1 to 2 days is enough. Depending on the result, physiotherapy, a surgical opinion or further blood tests may be advised.
Does this page provide a diagnosis?
No. It is informational and coordination-focused; diagnosis and treatment decisions are made by the physician.
What should be prepared before the appointment?
